The Yonkers nonresident earnings tax
If you work in Yonkers but live somewhere else, a separate nonresident earnings tax can apply to what you earn there. Plenty of people who commute into Yonkers have never heard of it, and plenty of Yonkers employers do not explain it. Part-year moves in either direction are where this goes wrong most often, because the year has to be split correctly between resident and nonresident periods.

A part-year Yonkers return is one of the easiest things in New York tax to get wrong, and consumer tax software is particularly weak at it.
