Westchester's business center
As the county seat, White Plains is home to a dense mix of professional firms, consultancies and independent practices. A large share of our work here is with people who bill their own clients: consultants, therapists, lawyers, designers, IT contractors and medical practitioners. Their tax questions repeat from year to year, which means the planning is genuinely repeatable.
Personal service and a real quote
White Plains has no shortage of large accounting firms. What we hear from clients who move to us is that they wanted the person doing the work to be the person they can actually reach, and they wanted to know the fee before the work started rather than after.
Tax, bookkeeping and payroll under one roof
Most White Plains clients use more than one of these. Keeping them together means your return is built from books we already know are clean, and your plan is built from both.
Tax preparation
Individual and family returns, plus LLCs, S corporations and partnerships. Rental property, income from more than one state, amended returns and IRS or New York State notices.
Tax preparation servicesTax planning
Year-round planning for business owners and high earners: S corp and entity decisions, retirement plans, the New York PTET and the moves that have to happen before December 31.

Monthly bookkeeping, account reconciliations and financial statements, with payroll and New York payroll tax filings handled on schedule.

No city income tax, but the commute matters
White Plains has no city income tax. In New York State only New York City and Yonkers tax their residents' income, so a White Plains household files federal and New York State returns. The commute is where it gets complicated: if you work in Connecticut, you also file a Connecticut nonresident return and claim New York's credit for the tax you paid there, so the same wages are not taxed twice. Commuting into Manhattan is simpler, because New York City does not tax nonresidents' wages.
High property taxes and the 2026 SALT cap
Westchester property taxes are among the highest in the country, which makes the state and local tax deduction a large number for most White Plains homeowners. For 2026 the cap is $40,400, up from $10,000 before 2025, and it shrinks once modified AGI passes $505,000, though never below $10,000. Plenty of households that took the standard deduction for years now come out ahead itemizing again. It is a real calculation each year, not a rule of thumb.
Quarterly estimated payments
If you bill your own clients, nobody is withholding tax for you. Underpaying through the year means penalties even if you pay in full by April. We set realistic quarterly estimates and revisit them mid-year when income changes, rather than repeating last year's figure and hoping.
The MCTMT threshold just went up
White Plains is inside the MTA commuter district, so self-employed people working here have paid the Metropolitan Commuter Transportation Mobility Tax once their net self-employment earnings in the district passed $50,000. From tax year 2026 the threshold is $150,000, at a rate of 0.34% in Westchester. Many consultants and sole proprietors who paid it for 2025 will owe nothing for 2026, which is worth reflecting in this year's estimated payments.
Home office and the qualified business income deduction
Two of the most valuable and most misapplied deductions for self-employed White Plains professionals. The home office deduction has a genuine exclusive-use requirement, and the qualified business income deduction has income thresholds and service-business limitations that catch out exactly the professions most common here. Both are worth claiming correctly and worth not overreaching on.
Retirement plans as a tax strategy
For a profitable solo practice, the choice between a SEP IRA, a solo 401(k) and a defined benefit plan is often the single largest lever available on the return. The right answer depends on your profit, your age and whether you have employees, and it needs deciding before the relevant deadlines rather than at filing time.
Beyond filing
Want to lower next year's bill, not just file this one?
We also work with White Plains business owners and families all year on tax planning in White Plains and Westchester: entity and S corp decisions, retirement plans, New York PTET and year-end moves.

White Plains tax questions we get asked
Do you meet White Plains clients in person?
Yes. Our office is at 75 South Broadway, 4th Flr, in downtown White Plains, near the White Plains Metro-North station. Some clients prefer to work with us entirely remotely, exchanging documents securely online.
Does White Plains have a city income tax?
No. In New York State only New York City and Yonkers impose their own income tax on residents. White Plains residents file federal and New York State returns, plus a nonresident return for any other state where they earned wages, such as Connecticut.
I live in White Plains and work in Connecticut. Where do I file?
In both states. You file a Connecticut nonresident return for the wages earned there, and your New York resident return claims a credit for the Connecticut tax, so the same income is not taxed twice. The credit calculation is where self-prepared returns most often go wrong.
How much does tax preparation cost in White Plains?
It depends on the complexity of the return, not the size of your refund. A straightforward individual return costs considerably less than a business return with a Schedule C, rental property or income from more than one state. We quote the fee before we start.
Do you also do bookkeeping and payroll for White Plains businesses?
Yes. We handle monthly bookkeeping, catch-up bookkeeping when the books have fallen behind, and payroll with New York payroll tax filings, so your tax return is prepared from books we already know are clean.
I am self-employed in White Plains. How do quarterly taxes work?
Nobody withholds tax on income you bill yourself, so you make estimated payments four times a year. Underpaying during the year triggers penalties even if you settle up by April. We set the estimates and revisit them when your income changes.
Can I claim a home office deduction?
Possibly, but the space must be used regularly and exclusively for business. A dining table that doubles as a desk does not qualify. Where it does apply it is worth claiming properly, and we will tell you plainly if it does not.
What is the qualified business income deduction?
A deduction of up to 20 percent of qualified business income for eligible pass-through businesses, made permanent in 2025. Income thresholds and limitations on specified service businesses apply, which affects many White Plains professionals, so eligibility needs checking rather than assuming.
